PTE vs. IELTS: Which Exam Should You Choose in 2026?
If you are planning to study abroad or migrate to countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, or New Zealand, an English proficiency test is a non-negotiable requirement. The two most prominent exams today are the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the PTE (Pearson Test of English).
Format Differences
The most significant difference is the testing format. PTE Academic is entirely computer-based, and grading is done by an AI scoring algorithm. IELTS offers both computer-delivered and paper-based options, but the Speaking section is always a face-to-face interview with a human examiner.
Scoring and Results
- Speed: PTE results are typically delivered within 48 hours, making it ideal for tight deadlines. IELTS results take 3-5 days for computer-delivered tests, and 13 days for paper-based.
- Objectivity: PTE's AI scoring is completely objective, leaving no room for human bias. Some test-takers prefer the human interaction of the IELTS speaking test, while others find it intimidating.
Which is Easier?
There is no universal "easier" test; it depends on your skills. If you are a fast typist and comfortable with computers, PTE might feel easier. If you prefer writing on paper and conversing with a human, IELTS is the way to go.
